OR Sen: Jeff Merkley signs on to The Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq

With the five year anniversary of the War in Iraq, Jeff Merkley signed on today to the Responsible Plan to End The War in Iraq authored by Major General Paul Eaton (U.S. ARMY RET.) former Security Transition
Commanding General, Iraq; Dr. Lawrence Korb former Assistant Secretary of Defense in the Reagan Administration; Brigadier General John Johns (U.S. ARMY RET.) specialist in counterinsurgency and nation-building; and Capt. Larry Seaquist (U.S. NAVY) and presented by Washington Congressional candidate Darcy Burner and other House candidates around the country.

Jeff Merkley has opposed the Iraq War from the beginning and has been a passionate advocate for Oregon's veterans.

Jeff has talked at length about the fact that Gordon Smith and the Bush Administration led us into this war and have never offered a plan to get us out.  Smith has manipulated and confused the media and the public and done nothing to bring an end to this war.

For example:

Despite claiming to oppose the war Smith voted FIVE TIMES to keep troops in Iraq.

From 2002 to 2007, Gordon Smith voted over 20 times to fund and authorize the Iraq war.

Gordon Smith supports pro-Iraq war candidate John McCain. If elected, McCain has promised to have no timelines and keep us in Iraq indefinitely

Just yesterday, Vice President Dick Cheney declared that the War in Iraq had been a "successful endeavor".

The plan to end the war will immediately:

End military action in Iraq and transition control of and responsibility for Iraq to the Iraqis;
Create the capacity for nation-building and the use of diplomatic power by both the United States and the international community; and
Commit to human rights in Iraq.
The plan will also prevent another military disaster like Iraq, by:

Restoring American moral standing in the world;
Restoring transparency and accountability to the executive branch;
Incorporating ongoing war funding into the normal Congressional budgeting process;
Removing fraud and abuse from the U.S. contracting system; and
Developing a clean energy economy.

Good news.  Merkley is a good candidate.

All of those are critically important not just for Oregon but for the entire nation. Go Jeff!!!

Re: OR Sen: Jeff Merkley signs on to The Responsib (2.00 / 1)

Its good to see candidates like Jeff Merkley get on board with the Burner Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq.  Considering that he use to be a nuclear weapons proliferations analyst for both congress and the pentagon, he clearly has the foreign policy chops needed to comprehend the situation and go with the best plan out there.

Wow (none / 0)

Oregon has a real tough choice. Two of the most progressive and grassroots candidates running against each other in a primary.

BOTH Steve Novick and Jeff Merkley signed on to this plan, already!

Novick's a fair bit more progressive and represents a real change instead of politics as usual, actually, but yeah. Good on Steve for endorsing the plan, and Merkley for following shortly thereafter.

Actually, Merkley signed on to the Plan yesterday and was the first U.S. Senate challenger to do so.  The Burner Campaign confirmed that for us yesterday, fyi.

Here is Jeff Merkley's web video, talking about ending the War In Iraq and signing on to the plan.

Purity Trolling to the bitter end... You gotta admire his determination to cut off his nose to spite his face, though. I've never seen anyone pursue it as doggedly as he has.

Re: OR Sen: Jeff Merkley signs on to The Responsib (none / 0)

Got evidence that Merkley wasn't first or is that just a wild assertion?

The idea that Novick is more progressive is just as wild an assertion.  Merkley has led the progressive movement in Oregon partnering with unions, environmentalists, the Bus Project (a group designed to get young people involved in political activism),  the LGBT community, education advocates, and young people to wrest control of the Legislature from 16 years of Republican domination to have the most progressive and productive legislative session in the last 30 years.  Many tried but only Jeff Merkley was able to bring such monumental progressive change to Oregon.
